"Dhaka, the capital of Bangladesh, has one of the most important buildings of the 20th century: its parliamentary building by Louis I. Kahn constructed between 1961 and 1982. Little is known, however, about the local architecture scene that has emerged since then. Yet contemporary architecture in Bangladesh exhibits a strong formal idiom that has its roots in tradition and is combined with an innovative handling of local resources such as bamboo and brick. Alongside texts by Andreas Ruby, Niklaus Graber, Kazi Khaleed, Saif Ul Haque and Syed Manzoorul Islam, the special photographs taken by Iwan Baan for this publication capture the imagination. Bengal Stream takes the reader on a lively architectural journey to a fascinating, and for many, unknown country located between India and Myanmar."

"‘I had no choice but to buy my first large format camera, and since I did not have a car, I mounted my equipment on the foot of my scooter and rode around Tokyo for more than two years. That was my starting point as a photographer, and it seems like a small miracle that more than 30 years after its original publication, a new version of Tokyo Style is being released by Apartamento’. —Kyoichi Tsuzuki. More than three decades after its original publication, this new edition of Tokyo Style revives a cult classic and token collector’s item. Kyoichi Tsuzuki’s timeless photographs offer an intimate look at Tokyo homes as they are truly inhabited, presented here with a refreshed design that preserves the original book’s generous format. A selection of the book’s iconic images culminates in a new afterword by Kyoichi that unravels the nostalgia sparked by his work, which captures an analogue world of rich self-expression. A foreword by writer Barry Yourgrau, a longtime friend of Kyoichi, meditates on the ‘untidy and prodigiously cluttered’ hideouts of Tokyo, filled with everything ‘from the raunchy to the freaky and funky to the kawaii (“cute” in Japanese)’.Tokyo Style invites readers into the routines of one of the world’s major metropolises, offering a template for the ways we might live more connected with ourselves and our community. ‘Take a seat’, Kyoichi beckons. ‘This lifestyle ain’t half bad’."

"Advancements in generative AI are transforming the way we conceptualize consciousness. Using the Japan Pavilion exhibition at the 2025 Venice Architecture Biennale as a starting point, this publication offers a thought-provoking dialogue between architecture, artificial intelligence and humanity. Imagining a near future when AI technology has further advanced, the Japan Pavilion stages a dialogue between the building’s constituent elements – the Hole, Wall Columns, Outer Walls, Brick Terrace, Pensilina, Tilted Loop Path and Yew Tree – and humans, as equals. Their conversation revolves around the future of the pavilion and a search for common ground. Behind-the-scenes reflections, critical essays and speculative writings expand on the themes of the exhibition and offer insights into a highly relevant topic."

Note from the editor:

"Muzharul Islam (1923–2012) has left behind an outstanding architectural legacy in Bangladesh, with a significance reaching far beyond the temporal and geographical horizons of its creation. Yet until now, his work has remained relatively unknown despite its relevance and singularity. This monograph presents numerous photographs and reproductions of detailed original drawings to introduce a series of unique buildings to an international audience, highlighting the Bengali architect’s way of thinking and actions, as well as his engagement in cross-cultural dialogue. Contributions by practising architects from different continents present multifaceted perspectives on Islam’s work, placing him within a historical context and global interconnections. Muzharul Islam’s pioneering and timeless works address burning issues that are currently shaping the global architectural debate: climate-sensitive and self-sufficient construction, social engagement and overcoming colonial mindsets are all fields that the architect pursued relentlessly since the beginning of his career in the 1950s. The oeuvre of Muzharul Islam manifests that architecture, with nothing more than its core tools of space, structure and tectonics, has effective levers at its disposal to support positive change. Through a subtle balance of pragmatism and poetics, the architect managed to create inclusive spaces of belonging."

"In times of global crises, architecture must also seek new sustainable approaches to climatic and social challenges. Designed by Kashef Chowdhury / Urbana, the Friendship Hospital in southern Bangladesh can be regarded as pioneering in this respect. The hospital, which was awarded the 2022 RIBA International Prize, provides life-saving healthcare, as well as enhancing the identity of a coastal region that has been devastated by cyclones and soil salinisation as a result of rising sea levels. Constructed in local brickwork, the architecture collects the valuable rainwater and uses the wind for natural cooling, while subtly interacting with specific characteristics of the world’s largest river delta. It also applies universal architectural means such as space, light and proportions to ensure the well-being of patients and the people close to them. A profound architectural stance developed out of the geography and history of the local context makes this work globally relevant. This book, which includes a photo essay by Hélène Binet, presents plans, diagrams and model photos that offer insight into the design and construction process in one of the world’s most climate-affected regions."

Note from the editor:

"Gio Ponti (Milan 1891–1979) was a key figure for Italian modernism; it is impossible to confine his legacy to a single creative field. From 1923 to 1930, Ponti was artistic director of the now cult Italian tableware manufacturer Richard Ginori. In 1928, he founded the internationally renowned magazine “Domus”, which – apart from a break in the 1940s – he continued to direct for the rest of his life. In the postwar era, Ponti and his associates Antonio Fornaroli and Alberto Rosselli shaped the architectural image of Milan, but were also active across the globe from Caracas, to Tehran, to Denver, to Islamabad, to Eindhoven, to Stockholm. This book delves into the many components of Ponti’s contribution to the twentieth century and traces his enduring influence in Italy and across the globe."
