Is a machine capable of measuring up to an artist? Could a robot substitute a painter or sculptor? To what extent is it possible to speak of artificial creativity? Machines that create: these are the artworks that this exhibition presents, with a specific focus on the subject of the artificial imagination, in our world transformed by the progress of artificial intelligence. Artists that create machines that create art. Seventeen installations produced between 1980 and 2017, all generated by computer software; robots designed, programmed and installed by artists from thirteen nationalities and present in numerous museums. These pioneering artists have fed their machines with colours, forms, and expertise to give rise to works of art generated by artificial intelligence.
