Note de l’éditeur:

The social and technical evolution of the last 150 years, strongly influenced by the Industrial Revolution, has drastically modified the form of chairs. From the early years of the 19th century, furniture designers and manufacturers had to take into account new building materials, new manufacturing processes as well as the needs of a changing social class.

This change in the aesthetic concept of furniture and interior space reflected a different way of life and has given us interesting information about new community life styles.

The first turned wood chair manufactured by the Michael Thonet workshop let us foresee the birth of the consumer and mass production society; the tubular steel chair designers of the twenties, influenced by Bauhaus, tried to create a universal language of forms.
