The structure of wood

Used book in a very good condition. The paperback soft cover is a bit damaged down, in the corners.

Note from the editor:

This book deals with the structure of wood primarily as a plant tissue, but also with reference to the economic aspects. A general treatment of the histology of wood is followed by a consideration of the gross and microscopic structure of coniferous and dicotyledonous woods and an account of those atypical structure. In subsequent chapters attention is given to the ultimate structure of wood, to its variability within a species and in the individual tree, and to abnormalities like compression and tension wood. The relations between the structure of wood and its physical properties, and uses, are examined and the surface features of wood known as figure are related to the underlying structure.

A section of the book explain the methods used for the identification of wood and in succeeding chapters these methods are applied to illustrate how a number of well-known woods may be recognised. A chapter is devoted to the nomenclature and classification of woods and is supplemented by a classified list of the more important timber producing plants. There is an appendix on technique for wood anatomy, including the preparation of material for microscopic examination, the preparation of illustrations and some simpler microchemical tests. The book is profusely illustrated by photographs and line drawings of gross and microscopic features of the book.
